Where our love for books and dismantling oppressive systems collide.

How To Set Reading Goals

Gowrl, who can honestly find the time to read between working a 9-5, taking care of the fur babies, hanging with your pals, building an empire, redistributing the wealth, destroying the patriarchy, and burning down this capitalist system? Not me, that’s for sure. But I know how important it is to make time to read, whether it’s devouring the lastest YA historical fiction or deep diving into a literary classic. Reading serves as an important and essential habit to keep me sharp and engaged, which is why i’m starting to devote more time to reading by holding myself accountable with reading goals. Even though I’m a busy ass B*, setting reading goals has helped me get my reading organized and on track.

Why Set Reading Goals?

Setting reading goals can be a fulfilling and productive way to improve your reading habits and accomplish specific objectives, such as reading 100 books within a year or exploring a new genre. By creating realistic and attainable reading goals, you can make your reading routine more enjoyable and challenging. Use this guide to assist you in creating achievable reading goals for yourself.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create reading goals

Define Your Purpose: Ask yourself why you want to set reading goals. Are you looking to expand your knowledge in a particular field, read more for pleasure, or develop a new skill?

Answer this: What is your main purpose for setting reading goals? (e.g., Expand knowledge, Enjoy leisure, Develop new skills)

Set Clear Objectives: Make your goals specific and measurable. Instead of a vague goal like “read more,” specify the number of books, pages, or time you want to dedicate to reading.

Specify your reading goals in measurable terms. (e.g., Number of books, Pages, Time commitment)

Consider Your Schedule: Be realistic about your time constraints. If you have a busy schedule, set achievable goals that fit into your routine, such as reading for a certain amount of time each day or week.

Determine the best time for your reading sessions. (e.g., Daily, Weekly)

Diversify Your Reading: Include a variety of genres, topics, or formats in your reading goals. This can help you stay engaged and broaden your knowledge and interests.

List the genres, topics, or formats you want to explore.

Create a Reading List: Make a list of books you want to read. This can include specific titles, genres, or themes. Having a list can help you stay organized and motivated.

Compile a list of books you want to read.

Prioritize: Determine the priority of each goal. Which goals are more important or time-sensitive? This can help you focus on what matters most to you.

Rank your reading goals based on importance or urgency.

Track Your Progress: Use a reading log, a journal, or a reading app to keep track of your progress. This will help you stay accountable and motivated as you see your accomplishments.

Use a reading log or an app to record your reading sessions.

Reward Yourself: Set up rewards for achieving your reading goals. Treat yourself to something enjoyable when you reach a milestone to reinforce positive behavior.

Plan rewards for reaching milestones. What will you treat yourself to?

Adjust as Needed: Life is dynamic, and priorities may change. Be flexible and willing to adjust your goals if necessary. It’s okay to modify them to better suit your current circumstances.

Be open to modifying goals based on changes in your life.

Join a Reading Community: Consider joining a book club or an online reading community. Discussing books with others can provide motivation, insights, and recommendations.

Join an online book club like Locas Por Libros or an in-person one like the Silent Book Club.

Reflect and Evaluate: Periodically reflect on your reading goals. Evaluate what’s working well and what needs adjustment. This self-reflection can help you refine your goals for better effectiveness.

What’s working well? What needs adjustment?

Remember, the key is to create goals that are challenging yet achievable, considering your personal preferences and lifestyle. Adjustments can be made along the way to ensure your reading goals remain motivating and enjoyable.

Happy Reading!
